About Tabi-RV

Slow travel was always the point

Tabi (旅) means journey — not destination, not itinerary, just the open road between. We started Tabi-RV because the best parts of Japan are the parts you can only reach when nobody's waiting for the train.

A small Tokyo-based crew, six vans we know by name, and route advice that comes from actually driving these roads — not from Google Maps. Whether you've got a weekend or a month, we'll match the right camper to the journey you have in mind.

Common questions

Things people ask before booking

What licence do I need? +
A valid licence from your home country plus either an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) or an official translation. We can tell you which one applies if you message us your country.
Where can I sleep at night? +
Free overnight stays at any of Japan's 1,200+ michi-no-eki (roadside stations), at official campsites (~¥2,000/night), or at designated RV parks. Sleeping in regular parking lots is a grey area and we discourage it.
Is fuel included? What about expressway tolls? +
Fuel is pay-as-you-go (we hand the van over with a full tank; please return it full). Expressway tolls are covered by the ETC card included in every rental — you pay actual usage at the end based on the meter.
Can the camper go on ferries (Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu)? +
Yes — all six vans qualify for standard car-deck ferry classification. We can book ferries for you at cost as part of the trip plan.
What if I have a breakdown or accident? +
Round-the-clock English roadside assistance is included on every rental. JAF coverage means a tow truck is usually under 45 minutes anywhere on the main islands.
How does insurance work? +
Comprehensive insurance is included (¥0–¥50,000 deductible depending on the vehicle). The zero-deductible waiver is +¥1,500/night if you want full peace of mind.
Can I pick up in one city and return in another? +
Right now pickup and return are both at our Edogawa-ku, Tokyo base. One-way options to Osaka and Sapporo are in beta — ask us in the form and we may be able to arrange.
How far in advance should I book? +
For cherry-blossom season (late March–April) and autumn foliage (November), 6–8 weeks ahead. Hokkaido in summer, 4–6 weeks. Off-peak, even a few days out is usually fine.
